According to Home Ministry, the MyKad will be more durable and better quality after a scheduled upgrade in July.
It had been reported last week that chip failure was the main cause of MyKad replacements in the country.The department had confirmed that 1,018,698 of the 2,158,621 applications for MyKad replacements received last year were due to faulty chips.
The smart chip contains complex electrical and wiring components, which are sensitive to stress, heat and humidity,".
The department had requested that the vendor conduct continuous research and development on the chip's durability.Besides that, the vendor need to upgrade the chips with new mould designs and stronger wire bonding.Reliability tests will be conducted on the new chips.
